A Dragon is a Dragon is a Dragon! The most iconic image in all of fantasy art is the dragon. Powerful, ancient and beautiful it has captivated the minds of artists, and story tellers. This mythological creature that has possessed our imaginations for centuries. Legends were built around these creatures that have been recorded as early as 5000 BC in Mesopotamia. Art of the ancient Greeks, Romans and Asian created dragons as well as today's contemporary movies and games. Students created three different mediums of dragons; traditional colored pencil drawings, three dimensional using aluminum foil armatures with Model Magic Clay, and one using the iPad app 123d Creature. A stylus verses a pencil, iPad verses paper, really? Kylie's art work using the iPad is Amazing! All done with the iPad app ProCreate! There are many apps for drawing and painting, Procreate definitely sits above the rest. Procreate shares many similarities with Photoshop, you have a palette of colors, opacity, eraser , smudge tool and different kinds of brushes. Every brush can be customized to create different textures. You can use up to 16 layers. It does take time, and practice to create beautiful work but so does any traditional piece of art. One of my favorite videos to show students the use of Procreate is below. Middle School students were challenged to draw a spring flower using the Tayasui Sketches iPad app prior to our traditional Watercolor paintings. It has become one of my favorite drawing applications. It works best if the students save it as a camera shot and then share. We use the free version so it limits us, but certainly doesn't limit creativity! Students used the iPad app My Flake to create digital snowflakes. The application allows you to cut and preview, which saves a lot of paper when students start cutting from paper. Designs for paper cut flakes were more thought out and detailed in design. Students then created snowflake banners displaying their paper cut flakes. Here are just a few of the birds the 7th grade students created using iPad app Tayasui Sketches.(Free Version) Beautiful! #artmatters #ipadartroom
Students created beautiful bird drawings using the iPad app Tayasui Sketches. Emphasis was put on starting the sketch just like we would if we were using paper. A thin lined tool with a contour line, blending colors, and using the appropriate tools such as the brush tool to get a watercolor effect for the background. #engagedartstudents! The Inspiration iPad app is a great way to take a written project and make a web or mind map diagram. Student's were studying the Rococo Period of Art and created these visual maps. The app has a free version in which I had the students use and then they shared it with me via email, which allowed me to open it in the full version and save five different ways. The written work in outline form is also a part of this which you can switch to on the top left of the app.
Kaleidoscopes, Mandalas, Radial Patterns, whatever you want to name them, they still amaze children! Radial balance is any type of balance based on a circle with the design extending from the center like rays. Natural examples would be the iris around the pupil in our eyes, flowers, and many other man made examples. They can be found all over the world in art. The beautiful stained glass windows of Chartres Cathedral in France is a great example.
Students used their iPads to create digital designs using the free app Kaleidoscope. Check out other students designs on our Just for Fun page. |
