I started a project with my digital art technology class this week teaching the Art Movement known as Art Deco. It was a design style which first appeared in France after WWI which flourished internationally in the 1920's, 30's, and 40's. The style is often characterized by rich colors, bold geometric shapes, and lavish ornamentation. During its heyday, Art Deco represented luxury, glamour, influenced art and music. It was used in consumer products such as automobiles, furniture, cookware, china, jukeboxes and heavily influenced architecture, and graphic design. The following shows examples of the influence in all areas along with wonderful music of the era. Dove Publications has some great resources for Art Deco Designs.
