The rock paintings of bears and horses in France’s Chauvet Cave are more than 30,000 years old. The cave is located in the Ardeche region of southern France. The animals most often depicted in Paleolithic caverns are the same as those that were hunted, even if their proportions do not match the animal’s size. Rock art locations heavily depended upon the presence of caves and shelters. So far 350 sites have been discovered, in Europe, nearly half were found in France. Horses are dominant subjects; others included were bison, rhinoceroses, lions and much later, mammoths. Another great website to learn about is Lascaux.
What better way to wrap up the study of prehistoric rock and cave paintings than to paint on the same type of surface.
